Welcome to the Central African Republic, a landlocked gem in the heart of Africa where the wilderness is wild and the adventures are shear-ly unforgettable! This flock-friendly nation is rich in forests, rivers, and remarkable culture worth exploring.
Landlocked and straddling the Congo and Chad river basins, CAR features rolling savannas in the north, dense rainforests in the south, and the Ubangi River forming its southern border. The climate is tropical with distinct wet and dry seasons.
Formerly the French colony of Ubangi-Shari, CAR gained independence in 1960 under Barthélemy Boganda's vision. Subsequent decades brought coups and instability, including Jean-Bédel Bokassa's notorious empire era in the 1970s, with ongoing peace efforts continuing today.
CAR's culture blends over 80 ethnic groups, with Sango serving as the national lingua franca alongside French. Music featuring balafon and ngombi harp is beloved, and vibrant storytelling traditions, dance, and communal ceremonies remain central to daily life.
One of the world's least developed economies, CAR relies heavily on subsistence farming, timber, diamonds, and gold. Cattle herding is significant in northern savannas, and small-scale agriculture supports most of the rural population.
Staples include cassava, plantains, millet, and groundnuts. Gozo, a cassava-based dish, is widely eaten, and bushmeat stews are common. Fresh river fish from the Ubangi and Sangha rivers add important protein to the local diet.
Dzanga-Sangha Special Reserve is a crown jewel, offering forest elephant and western lowland gorilla encounters. Bangui, the capital, features the Boganda Museum and lively riverside markets. Manovo-Gounda St. Floris National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
With around 5.5 million people, CAR is home to groups including the Baya, Banda, Mandjia, and Sara. The Aka people are renowned forest hunter-gatherers. Despite hardships, communities show remarkable resilience, warmth, and rich cultural pride.
CAR is a wildlife wonderland — forest elephants, western lowland gorillas, bongo antelopes, and forest buffalo roam its parks. The Dzanga-Sangha rainforest and Bamingui-Bangoran savannas support extraordinary biodiversity and some of Africa's last pristine wild spaces.
CAR is home to the Dzanga Bai, a famous forest clearing where dozens of elephants gather daily. The country straddles the Congo and Nile watershed divide. Sango is one of Africa's few national languages that is also a true creole tongue.
